Last weekend, Jaclyn Paige Photography had the chance to capture Emily and Kenny's sweet wedding day.  They had planned for an outdoor ceremony at The Barn at Wildwood Springs; unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans and it poured for most of the afternoon!  Somehow, we were able to dance between the raindrops (sort of) and get some great shots outdoors anyway.  We started with the First Look, during which they also exchanged wedding gifts to each other.  Emily wore her mother's wedding dress, altered from its 1989 glory and absolutely stunning on her! Kenny thought so too:

The First Look allowed us to create some images of Emily and Kenny before the ceremony (and before the rain started coming down in buckets.)

Because of the rain, the ceremony was moved indoors, but it's beautiful inside the barn as well!  Before it got underway, I captured this image of Emily in her final moments as a single woman.

I could probably write about each of these images individually, but here's the ceremony (with one more pre-ceremony shot here for good measure- I love this one!)  Also, take note of the Bride's grandmothers as flower girls.  I had never seen this done before, but I think it's an incredible way to honor these women!

The wedding party was a lot of fun.  We took some of these in the barn while the rain came down in earnest, and others after it had subsided.  Emily and Kenny were such good sports about the weather.  When life's storms roll their way, they've already had practice riding them out.  Maybe that's why they say it's good luck to have rain on your wedding day!

The reception was a memorable celebration of Kenny and Emily's long-awaited marriage.  They had a slideshow for their guests, BBQ, and dancing. I learned that Emily (and other ladies in her family) had spent months making all the decorations for the event, with lots of rustic touches including pine cones in her bouquet, which I thought was absolutely charming!

As the evening wound down, much to our delight, Emily and Kenny surprised us with the request to go back outdoors and get more portraits of just to the two of them.  It was so much fun to shoot outside with increasingly darker skies!  I'm so glad they asked, because we got some really great shots:

Sarah and Jesse's wedding at St. John's Lutheran Church in Knoxville was joyful, emotional, fun, exciting, beautiful, and all around amazing!  You'll see proof of all those things below.  One of my favorite shots from the day is this first one. We had to make sure we got the "iconic red door" shot, according to Pastor Amy.  I'm so glad she suggested the location!

Sarah and Jesse did not expect that Jesse's sister Valerie would be able to make it from New York, but at the last minute, she and her husband got to Tennessee!  We told Jesse that Sarah wanted to do some "around the corner" shots of the two of them holding hands around a corner but not seeing each other.  Valerie surprised him instead.  What a sweet moment.

In the meantime, Sarah finished getting ready to actually meet Jesse for their First Look, and Jesse's mom helped him with some finishing touches.

There are so many ways to do a First Look (and so many reasons it's a great idea!), but our favorite First Look set up is to simply have the bride walk toward her groom while he watches her approach him.  This way he can experience the thrill of watching the doors open with her standing behind them, and witness how beautiful she is from head to toe as she gets closer. Sarah and Jesse's First Look is definitely one of the more emotional ones we've had the joy of photographing.

Finally, after many years of dating and months of planning the wedding, the moment had arrived.  Sarah got to watch her own wedding begin while she waited to head to the sanctuary.

Imagine a wedding with a traditional setting (a stunning church), many personal touches (Sarah's brother helped officiate the ceremony), a heartwarming message (tears, laughter, and sincerest of love letters), beautiful music (cello, piano, and trumpet!), and an overall sense of "joyful love", and you have imagined Sarah and Jesse's wedding.

The reception was at the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN.  Weddings are fun anyway, but Sarah and Jesse's was REALLY fun!  Catering provided by Savory and Sweet food truck, bar services by Barger's Beer Truck, a bouncy house, cornhole, giant Jenga, bocce ball, 1,100 paper cranes, a general Japanese theme, and homemade desserts to include mini cheesecakes and TN whiskey balls.

After Sarah and Jesse's first dance, the cake cutting, toasts, and craziness in the bouncy house, it appeared to be a quiet and peaceful evening that would slowly wind down while the sun set...

However, D.J. Porter of Davis Sounds made sure that was NOT how the evening ended.  In fact, the party had really just begun!

What a great night!  Joshua and I once again were thrilled to be part of such an awesome couple's special day, and honored that they entrusted Jaclyn Paige Photography with the memories of their special day.  Congratulations, Sarah and Jesse!

Last week I talked about the benefits of cloudy skies during a portrait session. Today, while the sun beams all around, seems like a great time to show off some images with (you guessed it) sunny skies!

My absolute favorite way to use sunshine in a portrait is for backlighting.  Backlighting, as these pictures show, gives a glowy quality to an image, sometimes creating an ethereal scene.

Technically speaking, backlighting also serves the important function of separating a subject from the background.  With this family edged in light, their hair doesn't blend in with the background. Our eyes are not distracted by trying to sort out the background from the family.  This is a good thing, since it is, of course, a family portrait.

These backlighting examples have the same effect, though less dramatically than above.

Here's another thing I have learned about working with sunshine during a portrait session: when the sun lights up a scene, the image can easily end up with a color cast because of the setting.  When we're out in the woods on a summer day with lush vegetation all around us, we don't notice that our skin is greener than it would be if we were standing on an open mountain top.  We don't see it, but the camera does, and it's something I watch out for in deciding on a setting and especially when I am processing the image afterwards. Check out how the sunshine can affect the "color" of the images below:

Just as clouds can add to a more serious tone of an image if we choose to let it, sunshine naturally adds a happy, light, joyful air to portraits even if it's not directly shining on the subjects.  In the pictures below, everyone's smiles help add to that happy feeling, too!

Hooray for sunshine!

These days, I have been watching the weather a lot.  I wonder if it's warm enough to go for a walk outside, or if snow might cancel an event.  But I am especially interested in what conditions I may be facing for an upcoming family portrait session. While rain usually leads to postponement, sometimes cloudy days can be disappointing for the families I work with.  But I want to show you how overcast days can actually be really great for family photography!

One of the biggest benefits to having the sun behind clouds is that it opens up more options for setting up a shot.  In this photo, the sun may have come in at a sharp angle and been unacceptable on her face.  But as it was, I could have her sit exactly where I wanted her on this little bridge:

When the skies seem dark, there are other ways to brighten up a portrait.  Here, I shot through some bare branches of a bush, which lightened up the scene and gave this pretty face a soft background.

These bright yellow leaves probably would have been un-usable for a portrait setting if the sun had been on them.  Here, they add a lot of color, cheer, and "brightness" without being too light.  I think the yellow is a nice complement to the blue in this family's clothing, too, but that's another blog for another day!

Here's another portrait that feels sunshiny but would have been impossible if the sun were directly shining.

Back to our girl on the bridge, overcast skies let the tone of this image remain a little more subdued, matching her expression.

In this series of shots for a couple's Christmas pictures, it was VERY warm out!  If the sun had been shining, they would have never been comfortable in the scarf and vest, and their Christmas pictures wouldn't have looked winter-y at all.  Imagine if their hair was lit from behind with warm low sun- they would look out of place in these clothes! The cloudy skies definitely added to the illusion of a cooler day in this case, and that was a very good thing.

Hot cocoa and a blanket in the middle of a Christmas tree farm.  Thank goodness for the overcast sky.

So, at this family's session just outside of Knoxville, it actually did rain off and on.  The clouds were quite low and dark.  The sun would have ruined the expressions of these boys, making them squint and wrinkle up their faces as they laid on their backs looking toward the sky!

A damp setting can mean richer colors all around:

So, before you start to worry about scheduling for the perfect weather for your family or children's portrait session, just remember that cloudy days can yield some great photographs!

It has been cold here in Tennessee.  COLD.  My blood has thinned since we moved here from Maine over 7 years ago, so I'm no longer accustomed to such chilly temperatures! But it does warm my heart to think of the cold-weather wedding we photographed for this adorable couple, Cindy and Ray, in Gatlinburg.

Just Cindy's immediate family was in attendance, but the size of the group didn't impact how carefully she planned every part of the day.  The ladies from Bangs and Blush worked their makeup magic (not that Cindy needed much "magic") to make her a stunning bride:

Ray and the guys got ready in their own relaxed way:

And then everyone headed to the church for the ceremony.  The chapel didn't allow outside photographers during the ceremony, but there are still some special moments before a ceremony that are important to capture:

Can't you almost hear Cindy's sweet Louisiana drawl when you look at her smile?

I think this one (below) is my favorite from the day. It was a quick, unexpected laugh after someone honked their car horn in congratulations:

Although this one is a close second, because it required a lot more planning and luck!  Did I mention it was cold that day? By this point, my fingers were aching from the cold.  I can't imagine how the bride must have felt, but we moved as quickly as we could so she could get her coat on!

Ah, the warmth of The Park Grill! After thawing out a little, Cindy and Ray could relax and celebrate their new titles as husband and wife.

Congratulations to the new Mr. and Mrs. Kass!
